How to Clean the JUUL: Disassembly Edition

Sometimes our JUULs inexplicably stop working, leaving us only one option: perform a JUUL disassembly and clean its internal components.

Ahem, Take me directly to the guide please!

This procedure is ONLY recommended for those whose JUUL has stopped working in one of the following ways:

  • JUUL does not charge
  • JUUL does not detect pod insertion
  • JUUL detects pod insertion but does not activate when hit
  • JUUL activation stutters while hitting

It is also recommended that you try these basic cleaning techniques before attempting this operation.

Although disassembly cleaning can sometimes restore functionality, its still a gamble and you can introduce a host of unrelated issues after reassembling.

However, some of us are risk-takers, and if the choice is between a potentially janky JUUL or no JUUL at all, why not give it a shot?

The Goals of This Procedure

There are a couple of different desired outcomes of this surgery:

  • Cleaning any E-juice that has seeped into the device
  • Cleaning the JUUL’s connection pins in cases of extreme buildup

The first outcome is one we try if the JUUL is totally unresponsive, i.e.: Does not charge or detect pods at all.

The second outcome is usually the goal when the JUUL detects pods sometimes, but the connection is poor and constantly stutters while hitting.

Disassembly is required for these problems ONLY IF regular cleaning methods do not solve the issue.

The Alternative

If you don’t want to go through the hassle of this procedure, you can always just request a replacement on JUUL’s website.

In the first edition of this guide, I included a warning about how disassembling your JUUL COULD void your warranty.  Most electronic device warranties require that you send the faulty device back to the company so they can check for signs of tampering.

I’ve decided to remove that warning, as JUUL DOES NOT require you to send in your old device to receive a replacement.

So if you try this guide to no avail (as is often the case with these extreme scenarios) you can still always request a replacement device.

So tinker away, and have fun with it!

The Procedure

Materials Required:

JUUL Disassembly Cleaning Cleaning Mats

A.)  Disassemble your JUUL.

For brevity, and because it is a bit of a process, I won’t describe how to perform the JUUL disassembly in this post.

Instead, please refer to my guide on How to Take Apart the JUUL.

JUUL Disassembly Cleaning JUUL Components

B.)  DRY CLEAN the internal components.

Attempt to absorb any juice that has leaked into the JUUL using gentle pressure and paper towels.

JUUL Disassembly Cleaning Cleaning Internals

C.)  Thoroughly clean and dry the JUUL’s outer metal casing.

Since this is just a piece of metal with no electronic parts it can easily be cleaned using soap, water, or any other cleaning solution.

After cleaning the juice residue, make sure to COMPLETELY DRY the metal before reassembly.  Moisture plus JUUL organs is a big no-no.

JUUL Disassembly Cleaning Cleaning Metal Body

Another thing you may be interested in trying before reassembly is adding some unique style to your JUUL.

D.) Clean the metal connection pins.

Sometimes, these pins get SO GUNKED UP that they can actually get stuck in the compressed position (these pins are spring loaded, as shown in the video below:)

This creates a poor connection to your JUUL Pods and makes taking puffs difficult if not impossible.

We will use Q-tips, alcohol, and a good bit of patience to clean them out.

a.) Soak one end of a Q-tip in rubbing alcohol and squeeze out the excess, leaving it slightly damp.

b.) Press the damp Q-tip into each of the pins, noticing the black buildup starting to dissolve and be absorbed by the Q-tip.

c.) Repeat steps a.) and b.) until no more black residue is removed from the pins and they compress and extend freely. (this may take many repetitions)

Note: This is one part in which I found the tweezers to be very useful.  You can use them to grip and pull the stuck pins up, exposing some of the solidified gunk and allowing you to scrape it away, speeding up the entire process.

E.)  Reassemble the JUUL.

Upon cleaning both the internal components and the outer metal body, you are now ready to reassemble and cross your fingers that it worked.  If not, you may want to try requesting a replacement on the JUUL website.

Reassembly is certainly easier than disassembly, so you shouldn’t have too much trouble, just make sure your LED indicator is facing the right way!

If you encounter any additional issues as a result of disassembling your JUUL, refer to my guide on How to Fix Disassembly Problems.

How to Clean the JUUL reassembly

Important Reminders:

  • There’s a very good chance that performing this JUUL disassembly cleaning will not solve your problem.
  • Even if it does help, it’s possible that other issues will be created after disassembling.  For help with some of these issues, refer to our article on How to Fix Disassembly Problems.
  • You can still request a warranty replacement from JUUL, even if you have already attempted this JUUL disassembly cleaning.

A Clean JUUL, Inside and Outside

Hopefully, this operation has resolved your critical JUUL condition.

If not, well, I’ve already made it clear what to do next.

If anything, I personally find it fun to take things apart and see how they work.  The JUUL has an elegantly simple design and it’s interesting to see how it all fits together.

And remember, after you have performed your JUUL disassembly you have the opportunity to add a custom aesthetic before reassembling.

Have a great day dear JUULers, we’ll see you soon!

Did this procedure save your JUUL’s life?  Have you decided to add some heat customization to your JUUL?  What do you think about the JUUL’s internal assembly?  Have you found any other ways to clean the JUUL’s “organs”?  Let me know in the comments below!

Can you use a jul without the rubber prong cover?

    The Prof · March 19, 2019 at 10:17 pm

Hmmmm, I’ve never tried that, but also wouldn’t recommend it for a handful of reasons!

1.) The rubber prong cover is part of what keeps the JUUL together! (friction against the metal body)
2.) Removing this cover could allow for MUCH more leakage into the internal components, resulting in more malfunctions.
3.) Using JUUL without the rubber cover could mess with the pod connection, making it difficult to get hits out of the JUUL at all!

I hope this answers your question! if you have any more feel free to leave them here or in the Ask the Prof! topic of The Pod Professor Class Forum!

I didn’t know if I could safely disassemble because until now I’ve had really crap pins cuz they get stuck and I’m soaking the pins only in rubbing alchohol rn and idk they aren’t coming out what should I do I mean they’ve been like this for almost half a year so they are probably fucked up good but idk just was wondering what I should do if they don’t come undone

    The Prof · August 15, 2019 at 2:46 pm

    Hey Brad!

I have seen this condition before, and the outlook isn’t great. Although it can potentially be corrected, it is a very time consuming and painstaking process.

It sounds like you are on the right track with the rubbing alcohol. The only success I’ve had in this situation is soaking and draining the solidified E-juice around the pins many times over.

Sometimes this can restore the functionality of the pins, but I’ve also had JUULs with this issue that I’ve given up on. Your best bet may be to request a replacement on JUUL’s website

Or if you’re interested in trying out a new pod vape that performs better than the JUUL and will save you quite a bit of money, I recommend checking out my SMOK Novo Review or my Suorin Edge Review.

    Best of luck!
